Cycloset

Pronunciation: BROE-moe-KRIP-teen MES-i-late
Generic Name: Bromocriptine Mesylate
Brand Name: Cycloset

Cycloset is used for:

Treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is used along with diet and exercise. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Cycloset is a dopamine receptor agonist. Exactly how Cycloset works to lower blood sugar is unknown.

Do NOT use Cycloset if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Cycloset or to ergot alkaloids

  • you are breast-feeding

  • you have fainting (syncopal) migraine headaches

  • you are taking an antipsychotic (eg, clozapine, olanzapine, ziprasidone, haloperidol), efavirenz, an ergot alkaloid (eg, ergotamine), metoclopramide, a phenothizine (eg, chlorpromazine), a serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonist (eg, sumatriptan), or a thioxanthene (eg, thiothixene)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Cycloset:

Some medical conditions may interact with Cycloset. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

  • if you have a history of low blood pressure, type 1 diabetes, high blood ketone or acid levels (eg, diabetic ketoacidosis), or kidney or liver problems

  • if you have a history of mental illness (eg, psychotic disorder), migraine headaches, or if you have ever fainted

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Cycloset. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists (eg, sumatriptan) or sympathomimetics (eg, albuterol, pseudoephedrine) because high blood pressure or fast heartbeat may occur

  • Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), efavirenz, ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), macrolides (eg, erythromycin), medicine for high blood pressure, or telithromycin because they may increase the risk of Cycloset's side effects

  • Antipsychotics (eg, clozapine, olanzapine, ziprasidone , haloperidol), metoclopramide, phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), or thioxanthenes (eg, thiothixene) because they may decrease Cycloset's effectiveness

  • Chloramphenicol, probenecid, salicylates (eg, aspirin), or sulfonamides (eg, glipizide) because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Cycloset

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Cycloset may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Cycloset:

Use Cycloset as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • An extra patient leaflet is available with Cycloset. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.

  • Take Cycloset by mouth with food within 2 hours after waking in the morning.

  • Take Cycloset on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it.

  • Cycloset works best if it is taken at the same time each day.

  • If you miss your morning dose of Cycloset, wait until the next morning to take it. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Cycloset.

Important safety information:

  • Cycloset may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Cycloset with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.

  • Cycloset may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. This may be more likely to occur when you first start Cycloset or if your dose increases; however, it may occur at any time while you are taking Cycloset. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of these effects.

  • Do NOT take more than the recommended dose, take Cycloset more often than prescribed, or suddenly stop taking Cycloset without first checking with your doctor.

  • Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider.

  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Cycloset before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

  • Carry an ID card at all times that says you have diabetes. Check your blood sugar levels as directed by your doctor. If they are often higher than they should be and you take Cycloset exactly as prescribed, tell your doctor.

  • Cycloset may cause low blood sugar. Low blood sugar may make you anxious, sweaty, weak, dizzy, drowsy, or faint. It may also make your heart beat faster; make your vision change; give you a headache, chills, or tremors; or increase hunger. It is a good idea to carry a reliable source of glucose (eg, tablets or gel) to treat low blood sugar. If this is not available, you should eat or drink a quick source of sugar like table sugar, honey, candy, orange juice, or non-diet soda. This will raise your blood sugar level quickly. Tell your doctor right away if this happens. To prevent low blood sugar, eat meals at the same time each day and do not skip meals.

  • Fever, infection, injury, or surgery may increase your risk for high or low blood sugar levels. If any of these occur, check your blood sugar closely and tell your doctor right away.

  • Lab tests, including blood sugar levels, hemoglobin A1c, and blood pressure, may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

  • Use Cycloset with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects. Low blood sugar levels may also be more difficult to recognize in the elderly.

  • Cycloset should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.

  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of taking Cycloset while you are pregnant. It is not known if Cycloset is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Cycloset.
